Jollibee Foods Corporation is a Filipino fast food chain with over 1,200 locations worldwide. Jollibee currently has four locations in Canada: two in Winnipeg, Manitoba, one in Scarborough, Ontario and one in Mississauga, Ontario.

Started by Tony Tan Caktiong in 1975, Jollibee’s roots can be traced to an ice cream parlour in Quezon City in the Philippines.

Shortly after opening, customers coming in for ice cream started making requests for hot meals and sandwiches. Sales of hot meals and sandwiches soon overtook their original lineup of ice cream, so Caktiong decided to abandon the whole ice cream parlour idea and make the store into a fast food restaurant.

Thus the first Jollibee was born.

By 1978, there were seven Jollibee stores across Metro Manila, including the first franchised store in Santa Cruz.

Even with the arrival of US fast food giant McDonalds in 1981, Jollibee continued its rapid growth. Today there are almost 1,000 Jollibee stores in the Philippines.

Jollibee also expanded overseas, opening its first international store in Taiwan in 1986. It opened its first North American store in Daly City, California in 1998.

Its first Canadian store opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2016, drawing large crowds who waited for hours in sub-zero temperatures.

Today, there are four Jollibee locations in Canada, with 100 more planned openings by 2023.

Jollibee is popular because of the food they sell. Jollibee’s menu is best described as American-inspired fast-food. This includes Filipino versions of hamburgers, spaghetti and fried chicken.

The Yumburger is a basic hamburger with special Jollibee sauce, which might best be described as a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. The Yumburger is also available in different variations, including with a slice of pineapple, a strip of bacon, lettuce and cheese (the Amazing Aloha).

Filipino spaghetti is the pretty unique. It’s super red and it’s got hotdog slices. Filipinos usually have this kind of spaghetti during birthday parties, because it’s fun for both kids and adults alike. Jollibee makes it super convenient for you, if you want to replicate the whole Filipino birthday party experience. Just don’t wear white whilst eating Jollibee Spaghetti (you’ll thank us later).

Let’s talk about Jollibee’s chicken. In the Philippines, it’s called ChickenJoy. In Canada, it’s not called ChickenJoy, it’s called Jolly Crispy Chicken. Something to do with the North American copyright holder Chick-N-Joy (established in 1968).

Whatever you call it, it’s definitely “crispylicous” (crispy on the outside)and “juicylicous” (juicy on the inside) at the same time. Just tell them you want ChickenJoy, they’ll know what you mean.

Jolly Spaghetti Family Pack (saves 3-4) $14.99

Getting a family pack of Jolly Spaghetti will feed a family of four (or two very hungry adults). They have the party pack, but unless you haven’t had Filipino spaghetti for a while, the family pack is probably a better deal.

C4 Jolly Crispy Chicken (3 pieces with 2 sides & soda) $11.49

Two pieces of ChickenJoy is never, ever enough, which is why we recommend getting the three piece combo instead. It’s got three pieces, and comes with two sides and a soda.

Jolly Crispy Chicken (Chickenjoy) Bucket Treat C Jolly Crispy Chicken Bucket (12 pieces), 4 sides (choice of steamed rice, mashed potatoes, buttered corn or French fries), 4 Peach Mango Pies $44.99

If you’re having company over, a bucket of ChickenJoy is the way to go. 12 pieces comes with 4 sides, and 4 Peach Mango Pies. Okay, maybe two buckets (just to be sure).

Aloha Yum $7.49 (with French fries and soda) $9.49

You know what’s better a hamburger? A hamburger with a slice of pineapple! You can’t get anymore tropical than an Aloha Yumburger from Jollibee.

Burger Steak (3 pieces and 1 side, with soda) $8.99 (3 pieces and 2 sides, with soda) $9.99

If you’re not a big fan of hamburger buns, you can still enjoy a trip to Jollibee by ordering a Burger Steak. It’s a hamburger without the buns, and comes with gravy and rice. Can’t get any more Filipino than that.

Peach Mango Pie $2.99

Last but least, it’s the Peach Mango Pie. It’s the perfect end to a Jollibee meal, puff pastry with a peach mango filling. Even if you’re not a big fan of fast-food, a trip to Jollibee for Peach Mango Pies is always worthwhile.

Jollibee’s always on the lookout to partner with self driven entrepreneurs who are willing to devote time in overseeing daily operations of a Jollibee store.

Jollibee’s franchising program provides training, giving entrepreneurs the skills they will need to run a successful Jollibee store.

What are the requirements? You’ll have to have a minimum net worth of USD$5,000,000 for starters. Depending on the location, you’ll also need to pony up up to USD$800,000.

You’ll need to submit a proposal, which will include:

• Letter of Intent ( please include your exact mailing address and contact numbers)

• Applicant’s detailed resume.

• Profile of the company.

• Demographic and economic information of the market you are interested to franchise in. Potential customers, including estimated number of Filipinos, and other nationalities.

• List of possible sites that you, or your company can acquire

• Financial records showing financial liquidity, total assets, your capability or of your company’s to fund the Jollibee stores you plan to put up.

It’s not known when Jollibee will be open to franchising in Canada, but we’re thinking that it will be very soon, if they hope to come close to opening 100 new stores in five years. You might as well get a move on and give them a call to let them know you’re interested.
